In gatherings across the country, Americans remembered the day nearly 3,000 people were killed in terrorist attacks striking the nation 22 years ago.

At One World Trade Center in New York City, Vice President Kamala Harris joined Mayor Eric Adams and other dignitaries for a remembrance ceremony on the National Sept. 11 Memorial plaza. Former mayor Rudolph Giuliani and Florida governor Ron DeSantis also made appearances.

Instead of remarks being given by political figures though, the event featured victims reading the names of the dead and delivering brief personal messages, according to the Associated Press.

President Joe Biden is meanwhile expected to attend a ceremony at a military base in Anchorage, Alaska on his way back to Washington from a recent trip to India and Vietnam, AP reported Monday. Biden will be the first president to commemorate Sept. 11 in Alaska, or anywhere in the western U.S.

First lady Jill Biden is due to lay a wreath at the 9/11 memorial at the Pentagon, where a giant American flag hung over the side of the building, bells tolled, and musicians played taps at 9:37 a.m., the precise moment American Airlines Flight 77 hit the military headquarters.
