A driver has told how he was tailgated by an Audi 'doing 100mph' before a a three-car-crash left an elderly couple trapped in their vehicle.

Jake Ratcliffe was on the A500 in Stoke-on-Trent when he became aware of a silver Audi RSQ8 'up his a**e' who he said 'nearly rammed' into him.

Just a short time later, Jake said the same Audi was involved in a smash on the slip road to the new Etruria Valley link road close to Wolstanton Retail Park.

The collision a red Nissan Qashqaion its roof and a a black Nissan Grandland on its side with a man in his 80s and a woman in her 50s taken to hospital.

The man was described as being in a critical but stable conditoin.

Jake described how he and other passers-by stopped to help an elderly couple in one of the stricken vehicles.

He said: "An Audi RSQ8 was tanking it behind me on the D-road by Porthill. It was up my a*** end and did it with other drivers. Must have been over 100mph.

"I saw him further down the D-road speeding and swerving and then 20 seconds on I’ve come down the slip road and saw the accident and jumped out and ran down to help out.

"Apparently two lads had legged from the crash and left an elderly couple who were really injured. We had to break them out of the car through the front windscreen which was a challenge with the space we had to work with. There was a small dog in and an older gentleman who we had to get out."

Jake told StokeonTrentLive: "There were a few of us who helped the couple out the car. Obviously it wasn’t very nice to deal with and the couple were very shaken up. We all did our bit and made sure they were OK.

"We gave them water and got them blankets to try to keep them warm. A lady also was looking after the dog from the car."

Jake added: "If anyone knows who that silver Audi is which looks like a 22 plate, pass on the info to the police. Not a nice sight to get people who are seriously hurt out of a car on your way home after nearly being rammed yourself."

West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed an elderly man and a younger woman were taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital.

A man from the car that completely flipped over was assessed and discharged at the scene. And a member of the public who had gone to help those injured in the smash suffered a minor injury whilst doing so. He was also treated and discharged.

The smash led to long tailbacks as the southbound carriageway of the D-road was partially blocked.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "Four patients were treated after a three-car crash. Two ambulances, two paramedic officers, a Midlands Air Ambulance Critical Care Car and a North Staffs BASICS Emergency Doctor were sent to the scene.

“We took two patients to Royal Stoke from the car that was on its side. An elderly man was taken on blue lights, while a woman received less serious injuries.

"Ambulance staff did not assess anyone from the third car."

Staffordshire Police said in a statement: "Officers attended with our colleagues from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, Midlands Air Ambulance and West Midlands Ambulance Service also in attendance.

"We found a silver Audi RS Q8, a red Nissan Qashqai and a black Nissan Grandland involved in a collision.

"The red Nissan Qashqai was found on its roof and the Nissan Grandland on its side.

"An Asian man, wearing black clothing, from the silver Audi, was seen leaving the scene on foot heading in the direction of Porthill.

"The driver of the Grandland, a man in his 80s, was assessed by paramedics and taken to hospital. He remains in a critical but stable condition.

"A woman, in her 50s and a passenger in the Grandland, were taken to hospital for precautionary checks."
