1949 Mercury Custom Coupe

Ever have one of those builds where you're kinda tired of the kit or maybe it's not looking how you wanted? This was one for me. Finally pushed this one over the finish line and got it photographed today.

Primed (painted) with Mr. Finishing Surfacer 1500. I liked the beautiful, even coverage when I had primed a car in the past and thought it might look cool as a finished paint job - jury is out on this one. Interior is Tamiya LP-5 Semi Gloss Black with AK Interactive Matte Aluminum. Wheels are Spiked Evil from Jay's Wheels, also painted Matte Aluminum.

What I Learned from this Build

1. First time I made any significant modifications (at least for me) to a car body. I removed the side mouldings, door handles, side window pillars and badges. My hats off to guys and galls who achieve super-smooth results. There is a real art to sanding and priming, and sanding and priming... Also drilled a couple holes to add taillights from the spare parts box. After photographing the car, the exhaust tip looks kinda funny.

2. Mockups don't always resemble the final result. The front ride height is about where I planned, the rear was supposed to be about even with the front. On top of that, I probably should have moved the wheels inward to allow more space from the fenders. No way this driver will ever be able to steer the car. 😂

3. Highly recommend an ultrasonic cleaner for cleaning the airbrush. Just used warm water and it cleaned up beautifully. 👌

That's it for now. Cheers

The body looks nice and smooth, and I like the hardtop look as well.  Like the stance and the wheels.

Super nice looking Merc. That primer looks really nice and smooth.  Looks like Hot Rod black to me.  Nicely done.

What they said! 👍👍👍

Thanks for the kind comments folks. I didn’t put too much detail into this one… it was really about the paint and wheel combo. If you ever need a black primer, this one goes on super-smooth.
