Pinus mugo (Mugo Pine) Seeds
Zones: 2 to 7.
Native to central and southern Europe including the Balkan peninsula.
Also referred to as the Swiss Stone pine, the size and shape can be variable from a mounded dwarf to a spreading multi-stemmed small tree. The Mugo pine features green needles, reaching 1 to 3 inches (2.5 to 7 cm) long, oval brown cones to 2 1/2 inches long (6 cm) long and a dark grey and scaly bark. It prefers full sun and can tolerate poorer soils, but prefers a well draining sandy loam. To keep it compact prune it in late winter.
The Mugo pine is very popular as an ornamental plant because of its compact habit, low maintenance and tolerance of urban conditions. It is used extensively around foundations, walkways and borders. It is also used as a bonsai specimen.
Size: Height 15 to 20 ft; Width 25 to 30 ft.
Germination Instructions
Stratification: Provide about 30 to 45 days cold, moist stratification at 3° C (37° F) to 5° C (41° F).
- Soak seeds in water for 24 hours.
- Place seeds in sandwich bag(s) with a bit of damp sand or vermiculite to keep moist.
- Place the bag(s) with seeds in refrigerator for about 30 to 45 days.
- After the required time take the seeds out of the refrigerator and sow the seeds in pots 1/4 inch deep and cover lightly. Water gently so as not to wash away the seeds. Keep soil moist but not wet.
