Identification & Behavior: ~42 cm (16.5 in). The Puna Tinamou has the head and neck with broad black and white streaks. The rest of the body is gray with dusky and brown vermiculation, and fine barring and streaks. The thigh and vent areas are chestnut. Its streaked head and neck distinguish it from the smaller Ornate Tinamou. It generally forages in small flocks.

Status: The Puna Tinamou is uncommon to rare at an elevation ranging above the 3800 m. It also occurs in Bo and Ch.

Name in Spanish: Perdiz de la Puna.

Sub-species: Puna Tinamou (Tinamotis pentlandii), Vigors 1837.

Meaning of Name: Tinamotis: Gr. Tinamo= genus Tinamus and otis= bustard-like. pentlandii:  in honor of Joseph Barclay Pentland (1798-1973) Irish traveler and diplomat in Bolivia, and explorer.
