This Variable checkerspot is jealously guarding some scat and wasn't backing down from anything, including me! This butterfly was one of the many hundreds of Variable Checkerspots seen in French Gulch this day. French Gulch is in Shasta County, Northern California. Photographed on 6/1/2012.
