Species profile and care guide:

Then Sargent’s cypress is an evergreen coniferous species native to California in the U.S, the leaves are deep green and scale like. The bark is reddish-brown and flaky with good contrast from the leaves. The species does flower but the flowers are not flashy or impressive, after flowering small juniper-like berries form. The berries are heat activated and in nature require wildfires to properly germinate.

As Bonsai this species requires direct sunlight but can tolerate partial shade, for vigorous growth we recommend direct sun. The species tolerates a range of temperatures and will survive even the coldest South African winters with a minimum temperature of – 20°C. No need to worry about frost with this species. As with most bonsai a rich but well-draining soil is required for the best results and overall health. Repot in late winter/early spring every 2-4 years depending on the vigour of your tree. Water this species as you would with most Bonsai, don’t let the root mass become water-logged but do not allow the tree to dry out completely either.

Pruning and wiring a cypress is easy and similar to Junipers, pinch/pluck growth that extends outside of the Bonsai shape. Cutting the foliage with scissors is fine and not detrimental but some scales will die-back and turn brown around the cut area becoming unsightly. Wire a cypress as you would a juniper but take care to avoid excess pressure on the origination point of a branch as the branch can tear off. The branches are flexible and hold their shape well.
