A large, graceful pine to more than 50 m (165 ft.) tall with a straight trunk and spreading branches that form a tall, broad crown. The thin, needlelike leaves are 12 to 20 cm (5 to 8 in.) long and are bluish at first, turning to grayish-green when mature. It is common throughout the Himalayas from Afghanistan into Myanmar and grows mostly between 1800 and about 4000 m (6000 and 13000 ft.). The wood is very durable and in the Himalayas the tree is also tapped for its high quality resin. Also an easy and popular ornamental, it adapts to a wide range of temperate climates from USDA Zones 6 to 9. The seeds benefit from soaking and subsequent cold stratification for about 3 months.
