Siberian White Elm (Ulmus Laevis)

Package with 40 freshly collected seeds.

Ulmus laevis, the European white elm, asspen elm or pedunculated elm is a large deciduous tree, belonging to the family of the Ulmaceae, whose range is central, eastern and southeastern Europe, as well as Asia Minor; it runs from northeastern France to southern Finland, and in the east it reaches the Urals and in the southeast to Bulgaria and the Crimea; there is also a separate population in the Caucasus.

It is a tree that can be of great size and that, sometimes, presents a wide or irregular crown with a somewhat rounded shape. It is appreciated as a shade tree for the same reason, and, to a lesser extent, as an ornamental for its imposing size and lushness.

It typically reaches a height and width of 30 m, with a trunk 2 m diameter at chest height. The extensive system of shallow roots ultimately forms distinctive high buttresses at the base of the trunk.

The leaves are deciduous, alternate, simple elliptical with a sharp tip, relatively thin, often of almost paper-like texture and very translucent, with tomentous underside.

The petal flowers, pollinated by the wind, appear before the leaves in spring, they occur in racemes of 15-30; they are 3-4 mm wide on stems 20 mm long. The fruit is a samanal aled 15 mm long by 10 mm wide with a ciliated edge margin, the only 5 mmm seed matures in late spring.

This tree is the one that is most easily distinguished from other European elms by the long stems of the flowers, and is the one that is most closely related to the American elm.
