Kate Middleton‘s 2024 isn’t often to the best start with a “planned abdominal surgery” and then unfounded rumors that she was in a coma while in the hospital. It seems things might be turning around, though, because Prince William‘s calendar is suddenly booked and busy.

The Prince of Wales took some time off, beginning Jan. 16, to tend to his wife and their three children, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5, while Kate was in the hospital. Now that she’s home resting and recovering at Adelaide Cottage, he’s going to tackle his first royal engagements on Wednesday. William will be attending an investiture, a ceremony bestowing a person with royal honors, at Windsor Castle, and then supporting one of his patronages, the London Air Ambulance, at their annual fundraising gala in London, per The Telegraph.

William’s upcoming activities suggest that Kate is doing well with her recovery. According to a People source, the Prince of Wales has been “hands-on” with his wife’s recovery, especially since they don’t have “a huge private staff.” He’s been leaning on Carole and Michael Middleton, Kate’s trusted adviser Natasha Archer, and their longtime nanny, Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo, but he’s trying to be her main caregiver.

“We know they are a very tight family unit, and he wants to be there for them,” Robert Hardman, author of The Making of a King: King Charles III and the Modern Monarchy, explained to the media outlet. “So much of what they do with those kids is about normalizing life and not making them feel like they are in a special gilded cage. Calling Kate and William “a modern royal couple,” he noted that “there would have been more delegation [in decades past], but William “doesn’t want to leave it all to the nanny.”

Royal fans have heard very little about Kate’s condition except for a brief statement after she was released from the hospital. “The Princess of Wales has returned home to Windsor to continue her recovery from surgery. She is making good progress,” a Kensington Palace spokesperson said. However, William’s sudden return to the public eye seems to indicate that Kate’s road to recovery is headed in the right direction.
