Martha’s Vineyard, the Massachusetts Island, has a certain appeal to America’s high and mighty; from Jackie Kennedy-Onassis, who kept a home there until her death in 1994, to the Obama family. The Obamas have very recently closed a deal on a sprawling seven-bedroom house; just a hop and a skip from the sea and surrounded by acres of verdant countryside.

Barack and Michelle’s interest in the property reportedly peaked after staying at the place last summer when it was put on the market by by the lead owner and governor of the Boston Celtics, Wyc Grousbeck.

The property comes with a swimming pool, outdoor fire pit and vaulted ceilings. It has two wings which lead from the main house and are perfect for hosting guests. In total, it’s a 29-acre estate that includes its own private beach, a boathouse and has plenty of land (if the Obamas ever hoped to expand). The house has magnificent water views and no doubt a transportive ability to remove a high-powered individual from the pressure of the cut and thrust of daily life. Listing agent Tom Wallace praised its privacy as a ‘key feature of the property’.

Last year, the Obamas sold their summer home on the island for $15 million, having spent seven out of eight summers there while Barack was President of the United States. This property had reportedly been on the market for four years, first listing in 2015 for $22.5 million – but the Obamas were able to secure it at a discounted price of £11.75 million.
