Inspiring Destinations – Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Sharing is caring!

Mostar is a southern Bosnia and Herzegovina city, straddling the Neretva River.

It’s known for the iconic Stari Most (Old Bridge). The Old Bridge was built in 1567 and stood for 427 years before being destroyed in 1993 during the Croat-Bosnian War. It was rebuilt and reopened in 2004.

Mostar is an easy city to walk around; we stayed a few days and preferred to get up early before the crowds arrived on their day trips from Croatia.

The evenings were also good, as the street lighting added to the atmosphere.

Some of the buildings alongside the river

We won’t go into details of the war here, but you can still see lasting impressions of the battles on the walls of many buildings in the city.

Make sure you visit the 17th-century Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque and climb the narrow staircase for great views of Stari Most and over the city.

We were surprised to get a great meal at a very good price right next to Stari Most. Normally we stay well away from the tourist hot spots when dining, but we found Mostar very reasonably priced for every meal.

We loved the buildings constructed with stone in Mostar.

We made a road trip through Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, Montenegro and Albania in 2017.
