In comparison to the species, this American cultivar grows more quickly and develops a broad, pyramidal crown with a practically horizontal branching pattern. The tree can grow to approx. 13 - 15 m in height and can reach 9 m in width. The deep green leaves remain on the tree until late in the autumn and eventually turn wine red to purple. In the spring, the tree blooms profusely with white flowers in umbels. The sparse fruit, approx. 1 cm, is brown with lighter lenticels. Used as solitary tree and along avenues and streets. Sensitive to fire blight. Tolerates air pollution well, like all the cultivars of Pyrus calleryana. Winter hardiness zone: 5a
