Sturdy shrub to small tree about 3 m high with a round to fan-shaped growth pattern and dense branches. Blossoms with sulphur yellow flowers up to 4 cm in diameter. The flowers have a pleasant citrus-like fragrance. Unlike many other yellow-blossoming cultivars, the leaves of ‘Arnold Promise’ produce not only yellow but also orange to red autumn colours. The original plant stood next to Alfred Rehder’s office in the Arnold Arboretum (USA) and was noticeable every year for its profuse blossoming, beautiful colour and pleasant fragrance. Rehder was the first to describe the plant, but it was only later given the cultivar name.
