For a lot of teenagers, falling flat on your face in front of a stadium full of people would be traumatizing.

But for Shelby Clayton, it's all part of the gig.

Shelby, 16, is perhaps best recognized by her googly eyes, large claws and black and gold fur. She's the Calhoun County Sandcrab.

"My favorite part is just being crazy and making people laugh. When you have a team beating people every week, it gets boring. You want to have something to laugh at," Shelby said.

She laughed at herself as she retold the story of losing her shoe while running onto the field before one of the year's first football games. Tumbling in front of the stadium may not have been intentional, but the self-described class clown knows her job is to entertain.

"I can do whatever and people just love it. I love making people laugh," she said.

The Sandcrab spill came after an even rougher first football game, after which Shelby said she was so overheated and exhausted, she got sick on the way home.

But since then, Shelby's settled into the oversized Sandcrab suit, graduating to riding tricycles, jumping on mini trampolines and of course, dancing with her fans.

As the crabby face of Calhoun County, Shelby's pretty much free to take her entertainment as far as her imagination can go.

"She's brought new ideas to the mascot this year," said Soluna Riddell, director of the Calhoun County cheerleaders. "This year, she's going into the stands and trying to get the crowd involved. She brings props. She goes out there and flips and falls, and people love it."

Shelby said she's been watching closely the Sandcrab mascot since she was in middle school, all the while thinking she could fill the claws of her predecessors.

She explained how she came up with some of her prop ideas.

"If you saw a giant crab, how could you not laugh? But if you saw him driving a tricycle." she said, nodding.

Riddell said the extra effort has paid off with people telling her how much they love the Sandcrab's shenanigans this year.

Slipping on the Sandcrab suit has brought cheer to Shelby, too, who said she wants to continue acting as a mascot in college.

"When I get in the suit, I feel this boost where you're like, a lot of people are about to watch me, let's be happy," she said.
