The Matrix trend of last season is continuing to dominate at New York Fashion Week—and not just when it comes to eyewear. Second-skin leather, both matte and patent, turned up on runways from Alexander Wang to Gypsy Sport, and will likely continue to percolate once the shows make the move abroad. The trend has also been taking shape on the street style circuit—most recently as championed by Rosie Huntington-Whiteley who, this morning, took a futuristic corset top to the front row at Ralph Lauren.
The supermodel and new mother has been on a roll lately, stepping out in a Dundas sequined jumpsuit on Friday followed by Saint Laurent PVC pants last night. All three moves are a testament to how to a little texture can go a long way from day to night. The leather finish seen today took the preciousness out of lingerie-inspired dressing, while the sculpted peplum silhouette was more figure-flattering than the standard biker jacket. Huntington-Whiteley kept the rest of her Ralph Lauren look sleek yet streetwise, with trousers strung with a chintzy chain detail at the hip and pared-back accessories. Black-and-white houndstooth pumps were a subtle way to sneak in a print, while her angular sunglasses by Alain Mikli brought the post-apocalyptic fashion message full circle.
