Description

Deciduous, native to south-east Europe where the seeds were used as fodder; also to treat coughs in horses and cattle.

Flowers

The flowers appear in early summer, usually white with red splashes, erect, arranged in a conical shape.

Leaves

Digitate leaflets are finger-like. 5-7 leaflets, all radiating from a base point. Each leaflet is 13-30 cm long. The buds are resinous.

Fruits Seeds

Bur: spiny, green, containing a brown seed, the ‘conker’.

Medical

Bark and seeds: anti-inflammatory, strengthen arteries and veins; used to treat haemorrhoids.
