Description

This tree can live up to 500 years. Although deciduous, the brown leaves stay on the tree all winter, only falling off when the new leaves appear. In the Var they are called ‘truffle oaks’, since truffles are often found near the trunks of these trees.

The wood is hard and used to make furniture.

Flowers

Male flowers, catkins, are long and yellow.
Female flowers, tiny, grouped together in 1-6’s.

Leaves

Pinnately lobed leaf with lobes both sides of a central midrib. Grey-green, oblong, deep blunt lobes, hairy beneath, 5-12 cm.

Fruits Seeds

Nut: Acorn, a hard shelled pod that contains the fruit and seed of the plant; it does not open to release seeds.

Medical

Galls: abnormal growths on the tree caused by insects have astringent properties to treat haemorrhages, chronic diarrhoea and dysentery.
