Description

One of the most valuable hardwoods in Europe. It is fine-grained, very dense and has a good bending strength. In the past it was used for make billiard cue sticks, musical instruments and screws for wine presses. Today it is only used in decorative veneers.

Flowers

Flowers are creamy white. Each flower has 5 petals with 20 creamy-white stamens, assembled in corymbs, 10 cm across.

Leaves

Lobed leaf shaped with indents and protrusions. Resembling a palmate leaf with 5-9 acute lobes, shiny, autumn red, 6-14 cm long.

Fruits Seeds

Drupe: outer fleshy parts surround a pit with a seed inside, russet-brown with golden speckles, 15 mm.

Edible

Fruit: has a sour flavour; when overripe and bletted it can taste like dates. Another name for the fruit is ‘chequers’ and prior to hops was used to flavour beer.
