MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WKRN) — Authorities blocked off a road in Murfreesboro Saturday night to investigate a shooting involving a motorist and some motorcyclists that turned deadly.

At 9:05 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, the Murfreesboro Police Department announced on social media that South Rutherford Boulevard was closed from Southeast Broad Street/Manchester Highway to Church Street amid the investigation into the “possible road rage incident.”

According to officials, during the incident — which involved the driver of an SUV and a group of people riding motorcycles — shots were fired and two people were hit. Both individuals were brought to the hospital.

Motorists were asked to seek an alternate routes as officials continued to investigate the scene. About three hours after announcing the crash, law enforcement confirmed the road was back open.

On Sunday, April 14, the Murfreesboro Police Department updated its social media post, saying two motorcyclists were shot during the “road rage incident” on South Rutherford Boulevard, which took place just before 7:45 p.m. on Saturday.

According to authorities, 49-year-old Paul Howell was taken to the hospital, where he later died. Meanwhile, a 48-year-old man was shot in the arm and treated for his injury.

The suspected shooter, 39-year-old Joseph Gann, left the scene of the shooting and later turned himself in to officers at Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department Station 3 on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, law enforcement said. Gann was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, and one count of reckless endangerment.

Police said Gann was booked into the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on a $1,510,000 bond. His hearing is set for June 24 in Rutherford County General Sessions Court.

Officials said detectives are still trying to determine what caused the incident. No additional details have been released about Saturday night’s shooting.
