Selecting plants for your landscape can be an overwhelming chore, but properly choosing your
plants will ensure that they perform to your expectations. There are certain things you need to consider
when selecting your plants.
1. Plant Selection
2. Planting Properly
3. Watering Properly
4. Fertilizing
5. Pruning
We hope that the information in our Planting Guide will make your planting experience a good one.
Plants come in a multitude of shapes, sizes, colors, and textures. Some require lots of sun, while others need
a bit more shade or some combination of the two. Certain plants also need more water than others. Take a
moment to think about what you wish to accomplish in your yard, as well as the environment you have to
work with. Walk around your landscape, visualizing your finished landscape project. Another step you can
take is to look at your landscape from inside your house. Stand at the window, looking out. Try to get a feel
for what it will look like during the different seasons. For example, placing evergreen trees and shrubs within
view of your windows will bring some life to your landscape during the dead of winter when most plants have
shed their leaves. Landscapers may use terms such as foundation plants, corner bushes, accent plants, speci-
men plants, and canopy trees, (Just to name a few). Foundation plants are usually planted around the
exterior of your house near the walls; some common plant choices include Hollies, Yews, and Boxwoods.
The types of plants you use can vary depending upon what you might want to cover and/or accent. Corner
plants are set at corners or at a change in direction of the wall of your home; Dwarf Alberta Spruces,
Upright Holly Trees, Arborvitaes, and Cap Yews can all work well in instances like this. Your Accent plants
come in a wide variety of different shapes, sizes, and colors. They can be tall and narrow like an Irish Juniper
or a Sky Pencil Holly, or lower growing plants such as the Crimson Pygmy Barberries, Goldthread Cypresses,
or Dwarf Nandinas. The plants’ colors and textures can add contrast to the foundation plantings; which can
make the colors of your landscape jump out at you even more. The finishing touches to any good landscape
are the Specimen plants. These plants are valued for their rich colors, unique shapes, and the beauty they
No matter where you live, there is probably room in your garden for luscious red tomatoes or an
assortment of colorful peppers. A vegetable garden will give you the satisfaction of growing your own fresh
fruits and vegetables and can save you money on your grocery bill. Gardening with your children will not only
teach them the skills needed to tend for their own landscape one day, but also show them the value of hard
work. So why not get them off to an early start? Plan out your vegetable garden beforehand, the location is a
key factor. Accessibility to a water source is very import, as is plenty of sunshine. The soil is also another
important factor- it should be loamy and drain well. Having a vegetable garden will also add unusual textures,
colors, and flowers which will enhance the beauty of your outdoor area.
Tomatoes
Tomatoes are one of the most versatile fruits one can grow in the garden. They come in all shapes, sizes,
colors, and are delicious fresh from the garden!
Tomatoes come in two varieties, Determinate and Indeterminate. Determinate tomatoes are more
compact and set all their fruit at once. They require less space than indeterminate tomatoes and do well in
containers. They should never be pruned, as it reduces the amount of tomatoes you will receive. Determinate
tomatoes can also be planted in a series so you can continue to harvest fruits from your plants throughout
the growing season.
Indeterminate tomatoes, also known as vining tomatoes, require more room and need adequate
support. Indeterminate tomatoes can be pruned back as they continually bloom and set fruit throughout the
growing season.
Tropical Plants
During the warm months of the year we carry a wide selection of tropical plants. These are plants that are not
hardy to our area but most of them can be successfully over wintered in your home. Tropical plants set the mood in your
landscape. The scent of Gardenias blooming or the fragrances of a night blooming Jasmine on a warm summer night can
make your outdoor living area feel like a tropical paradise. Tropical plants grow best in the heat of summer. Be sure and
keep them well watered and fertilized. Protect them from cold weather or you will be back in the spring for a new tropical
plant.
Perennials
Without a doubt, perennials are one of the most rewarding plants you can grow in your garden,
because they come back year after year when properly cared for and provide color throughout various seasons
of the year. An assortment of Tulips can brighten the dull spots in your landscape as they gracefully pop
open with blooms in the early spring. The heat of the summer is no problem for a heavily blooming, bright
yellow Coreopsis. And who could forget about the beautiful harvest colors provided by Mums in the fall of
the year? Perennials come up in the spring, bloom, and die back each winter only to arise again the following
spring as the sun warms the earth. Most perennials are started in greenhouses in early spring to give them a
good start in growing for the year. Be sure to wait until after the last frost has passed us by before planting
tender perennials in your garden.
Vines
If you seek a plant that spreads its limbs far away from the root system, draping itself over anything
in sight, then get yourself some vines! They can spread and cover an area faster than any other plant. Vines
can be used as a ground cover or trained to grow up a trellis or any other structure in your landscape. A
mailbox covered in clematis blooms during the summer can be a moment to remember. The sweet fragrance
of honeysuckle drifting through the air can bring back fond memories of your childhood. And who can forget
that irritating itch that comes from even the smallest patch of poison ivy? No matter which variety of vine
you go with, it is sure to make a beautiful addition to your landscape.
Ground covers are a unique part of the Plant Kingdom. Their purpose is to provide a covering on
the ground, hence the clever nomenclature. Many areas in your landscape can benefit from a ground cover
planting. For example, you can easily remedy steep slopes or poor, rocky soil just by establishing ground
cover in the area. Maybe there is a spot where grass just will not grow under your trees or you simply dislike
mowing a particular patch of your lawn, so why not just fill it up with a ground cover? Some add a dazzling
touch of color with their seasonal blooms while others give you a nice evergreen covering in the dead of winter.
Ground covers form a permanent (We hope) covering over the earth which helps to prevent erosion,
and hinder weeds and other vegetative nuisances from taking over a tough area to plant. These omnifarious
plants can bear flowers, colored foliage throughout different times of the year or just kind of hang out and
cover an unpleasant view throughout the year.
