Summary[edit]

Description Returning from its pampas wintering grounds in Argentina, the Upland Sandpiper Bartramia longicauda takes advantage of the nesting and feeding habitat that Kirwin NWR and adjacent private land prairie has to offer. A regular seasonal resident to this refuge in north-central Kansas, the Upland Sandpiper will perch on fenceposts. After flying to the perch, it will hold its wings briefly above its body in a motion that looks like a stretch. Credit: Tony Ifland / USFWS.
