Description
English: Cancer irroratus Say, 1817 - Atlantic rock crab exoskeleton in Maine, USA

The crustaceans are a large group of arthropods that inhabit marine, marginal marine, freshwater, and terrestrial habitats. The crustaceans include crabs, lobsters, shrimp, crayfish, barnacles, ostracods, and other organisms. The oldest fossil crustaceans are in the Cambrian. The group experienced a significant radiation in the oceans during the Mesozoic Marine Revolution.

The Atlantic rock crab is native to most of the western North Atlantic Ocean, plus the Iceland area.

Classification: Animalia, Arthropoda, Crustacea, Malacostraca, Decapoda, Brachyura, Cancridae

Locality: gravel/bedrock shoreline along Bar Harbor Shore Path, northeastern Mt. Desert Island, coastal Maine, USA (~vicinity of 44° 23’ 22.24" North latitude, 68° 12' 01.42" West longitude)
