The Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo) is close to 66㎝ in length. The plumage is ochre brown in color with black streaks on the breast, back and wings and dark brown mottling in the rest of the areas. One of the very rare resident birds found in Korea, the Eurasian eagle-owl lives on rock cliffs in mountainous areas or riverside cliffs in the northern section of South Korea. The bird of prey stays perched on a tree branch or on a rock during the day, in an upright position, and hunts at night. It preys mainly on pheasants, hares, house rats, frogs, snakes and lizards. Owls and true owls are today threatened due to the contamination of their food supply. The destruction of their habitats and breeding and wintering grounds is another contributing factor, along with poaching, to their rapidly dwindling numbers. Owls and true owls are protected bird species worldwide. In Korea, seven of the ten locally recorded owl species are protected under designation as Natural Monuments.
