This small colorful trogon is fairly common. It is Cuba's national bird reportedly because its colors include those on the Cuban flag. It is the only member in the genus Priotelus. Its scientific name comes from the Greek meaning "saw-tooth tail." Two subspecies are recognized. This is the nominate main island race. A slightly smaller race is restricted to the Isle of Pines. Males and females are alike.
