Himalayan Shrike-Babbler (Pteruthius ripleyi) 23 February 2016. Vinayak, Nainital County, Uttarakhand, IN

This is a female showing light buff underparts. Males have a bold white supercilium. Clements/eBird, IOC and H&M all split this species from the former White-browed/Blyth's Shrike-Babbler following recommendations by Rheindt & Eaton (2009) and Reddy (2008). However, as of now no published field guide illustrates Himalayan Shrike-Babbler which ranges through the Western Himalayas.

Males differ slightly from Blyth's Shrike-Babbler in the color of their tertials (more orange, less chestnut in Himalayan) and primary edges (browner, less gray in Himalayan). There are no known plumage differences in the females. However, Blyth's and Himalayan differ strongly in vocalizations with Himalayan's song being much slower with individual notes more drawn-out. Both song-types have been recorded in Bengal, Bhutan, and Arunacha suggesting their ranges may overlap there. The two also differ strongly in mDNA. Further study is needed to clarify their ranges.

The taxonomy of the Shrike-Babblers is controversial. Most authors include them with the Vireos (Vireonidae) but HBW still includes them with the Babblers. HBW also does not recognize the validity of present species treating it as a synonym of the "validirostris" race of Blyth's Shrike-babbler. Canon PowerShot SX50 HS..
