Notes

Clicked at Nal sarowar Gujrat. One of the few places where I always find solace. They are found here in thousands. One snap shows a mixed flock of Greater and Lesser Flamingoes. The flamingoes have different feeding habit. They put their necks under water and feed on small animals and planktons filtering them with the help of minute hair like structures on beak. While feeding, the beak is used upside down; upper mandible is burrowed in the mud. They get the pink colour from the carotenoid they get from the planktons. Large populations are found in Rann of Kutch also, my favourite spot. I just love it.

Whenever I visit Nal sarovar, I roam around with a very knowledgeable and trustworthy person, Hashambhai. His eyes are not less than a binocular. He can spot larger birds like Pelicans, Flamingoes from a distance of even 1 KM. His senses and knowledge of birds are just unbelievable. The food you get there, Bajra Rotis, Brinjal bharta, jaggery, home made butter, butter milk, red chilli chutney. (That’s why I frequently go there; did anybody say Flamingoes? What is that?)
