Kohima, September 20 (MExN): A Malayan Night Heron (Gorsachius Melanolophus) was handed over to the Kohima Forest Division by Vesato Theluo on September 20. 

The bird was rescued from the premises of RDNÜMS, Old Ministers’ Hill, Kohima on September 19 evening and released in the presence of Pezaneinuo Chielie, Range Forest Officer, Kohima Range and the Range Staff on September 20, stated a press release received here. 

Range Forest Officer also mentioned that this is the third case in a span of three years. The first reported case was on November 18, 2020 and second reported case on October 6, 2021. Globally, this species is found in Southern and eastern Asia including India. Though the population trend is not yet known, however it lies between 2000 and 20,000 and its classification status by IUCN is under Least Concern (LC).
