The White-winged Fairy-wren is widespread in scrubby country in inland Australia. The spectacular males make brief forays to the top of bushes to pronounce possession of their territory to other males. They are very wary and difficult to approach and stick close to dense thorn bushes into which they dive or fly off to another one. Females are very plain and easier to approach from experience. A territory holding male usually has a number of females. The blue form of this bird, ssp. leuconotus, is found on mainland Australia. Black subspecies are found on a few islands off the coast of WA.
