There are just two species of picathartes (meaning "magpie-vulture"). They are found in the rainforests of west and central Africa, where they are much sought after by visiting birders. As their alternative name of "bald crow" suggests, they are fairly large birds with a featherless (though colourful) head and crow-like bill, and are relatively long-necked and long-legged. They feed on a variety of invertebrate prey, as well as small vertebrates.
