Can anyone guess what species of bird this is? Hint: The name in old English means “goose hawk” and they are relatives of both the Sharp-shinned Hawk and Cooper’s Hawks. Secretive by nature, this species is typically found in forests and known to eat other birds. If you guessed a Goshawk, you’re right! Meet Goshawk 23-2314. This adult was found in a chicken coop in Brooks with a suspected leg injury. Fortunately for 23-2314, an initial examination revealed no fractures. However, we did discover that the bird was very thin and had a heavy parasite load. After a few weeks of care from our amazing staff and volunteers, Goshawk 23-2314 has mostly healed and has been upgraded to an outdoor enclosure. We are hopeful they will be ready for a successful release in the coming weeks!

Wild Wolf Comes to Town Recently, a wolf from Kekexili has become a star of the Chinese internet. This elderly wolf found it difficult to forage in the wild due to aging, and instead begged for food in a pleasing way from a large number of tourists who came to the area on holiday. After several months of being fed, this once bony wolf became obese and even brought another wolf to obtain food together. This incident quickly caught the attention of many people through social media. Some people believe that this wolf only chose a way to survive and should let nature take its course; while other people believe that this belongs to human destruction of natural rules and should be prohibited. Anyway, the behavior of this wolf, like a dog close to humans, has sparked speculation: will wild animals like this that have never been tamed also change their way of life due to various factors? The documentary Wolves Unleashed: Against All Odds explores this issue from another perspective. [Warning: This video includes images some people may find distressing.] Litter is devastating to wildlife. Bottles and food containers people throw from vehicles attract foxes, badgers, hedgehogs and birds. These animals may become trapped in packaging or get hit by passing vehicles while trying to reach discarded litter. Our wildlife should not bear the brunt of litter. You can make a huge difference. Always throw your litter in a bin. If no bin is available, or if it’s too full, take it with you and dispose of it at home. Find out more and report litter. ▶️ https://lnkd.in/et-Wd6Jh #LetsTalkAboutLitter

SoCal Stuff That Kills Here's a quick look at the SoCal Nature that could kill you. Although shark attacks are rare in California, there have been 209 shark incidents in California since 1950. Of those, 15 were fatal and all of the fatalities involved white sharks. While bear attacks are relatively rare in California, you could come into danger if you accidentally threaten a mama bear's cubs. Female black bears are known to become extremely aggressive when faced with protecting their offspring. California is home to six rattlesnake species, all of which are venomous. Other venomous snakes include the Western Diamond-backed Rattlesnake and Sidewinder Rattlesnake. https://lnkd.in/grecsvEe https://lnkd.in/gv5E6sgw https://lnkd.in/gwwpD8qU https://lnkd.in/gCsNEk8J https://lnkd.in/g6qbqtqp (951) 481-2177 aaron.glascock@yahoo.com #livinginsocal #movingtosocal #socalrealtor #deadliestanimals #california #wildfire #nature #animals #dangerousanimals #venomousanimals #predators #prey #danger #rattlesnake #blackbear #greatwhiteshark #bobcat #earthquake #mountainlion

Number 28. Timing is everything. I’ve written about a lot of things we can learn from animals. For example, the American Bison runs into a storm to shorten its duration. I love that. So now, I give it up to the Oak Tree. Did you know that Oak Trees produce more acorns in specific years than squirrels (or other animals) can eat in the fall? My wife told me this on a walk recently. I looked it up. She was right. According to the Audubon Society, this phenomenon is called a Mast Year. “A mast year is not simply resource driven. Weather variables cannot account for the excessive, over-the-top, nutty production of acorns in a mast year.” In short, we’re not entirely sure of what causes it. It’s as if the Oak Tree knows that it must drop more acorns (in certain, random years) that cannot be predicted by wildlife…thereby securing their future. I might be crazy for referencing this, but I like the thought. Change your pace. Pick your timing. Don’t be predictable. It might make all the difference.
