EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph showcases two magnificent and tragically extinct parrot species: the Greater Vasa Parrot (Coracopsis vasa) and the Mascarene Parrot (Mascarinus mascarinus). The image is taken from Th. Lejeune's Complete Works of Buffon, published in Brussels in 1837. The Greater Vasa Parrot, also known as Buffon's Vasa Parrot, is depicted on the left side of the print. With its vibrant green plumage, distinctive red beak, and yellow eyes, this parrot was a sight to behold. The Greater Vasa Parrot was endemic to the Mascarene Islands in the Indian Ocean, specifically Mauritius and Reunion. Unfortunately, it was hunted to extinction due to deforestation and overexploitation for the feather trade. On the right side of the print is the Mascarene Parrot, which was once abundant on the same islands as the Greater Vasa Parrot. This parrot had a striking appearance, with its blue-grey plumage, red beak, and yellow eyes. However, it too was driven to extinction due to habitat destruction and hunting for food and feathers. The intricate details and lifelike quality of this handcoloured lithograph serve as a poignant reminder of the beauty and fragility of these two magnificent birds. The image is a testament to the important role that natural history records play in documenting and preserving the natural world, even as we strive to prevent further losses and extinctions.
