EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph showcases the Western Parotia, Parotia sefilata (previously known as Parotia sexsetacea), a mesmerizing bird species native to the Western New Guinea region. The image, created by Jacques Barraband and expertly hand-colored by A. Scipp, is part of the Naturhistorischer Bildersaal des Thierreiches, or Natural History Picture Gallery, of Georg Friedrich Treitschke in Leipzig, published in 1840. The Western Parotia is renowned for its striking appearance, with the male and female displaying distinct differences. The male, depicted on the left, boasts an elaborate plumage of elongated, iridescent green and blue feathers, forming a fan-like crest on its head. The female, on the right, has a more subdued appearance, with a brownish-gray body and a shorter crest. The Western Parotia is a fascinating bird, known for its courtship display. During mating season, the male raises and spreads its crest, making itself appear larger and more impressive to attract a female. This intricate and colorful plumage has made the Western Parotia a favorite subject among naturalists and bird enthusiasts for centuries. This beautiful lithograph is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and artistry of the time. The vibrant colors and intricate patterns bring the Western Parotia to life, offering a glimpse into the natural world of over 180 years ago. Today, this species remains an important part of the biodiversity of the Western New Guinea region, and efforts are underway to protect and conserve its habitat.
