Identification & Behavior: ~39 cm (15.3 in). The Red-ruffed Fruitcrow is mostly black. The throat and breast are bright orange in both sexes. In the male, the orange breast grades to dull orange towards the rest of the underparts. It forages generally alone in the canopy of humid montane forests. The combination of black and orange breast and underparts is unique in its range but see a female Amazonian Umbrellabird.

Status: The Red-ruffed Fruitcrow is rare in humid montane forests of the east slope of the Andes at elevations ranging between 1100-2100 m. It also occurs in Co, Ec, and Br.

Name in Spanish: Cuervo-Frutero de Garganta Roja.

Sub-species: Red-ruffed Fruitcrow (Pyroderus scutatus masoni), Ridgway, 1886.

Meaning of Name: Pyroderus: Gr. pur, puros= fire and dera= neck, throat. scutatus: L. scutum= oblong shield, scutatus= armed with a shield.
