Saffron-crested Tyrant-Manakin (Neopelma chrysocephalum)

Identification & Behavior: ~13 cm (5.1 in). The Saffron-crested Tyrant-Manakin has olive upperparts with a grayish head and golden-yellow crest. The throat is whitish and grades to an olive breast followed by yellow rest of the underparts. The iris is pale. It forages in the understory and midstory of forest on nutrient-poor soils such as “Varillales”. It is very similar to the Sulphur-bellied Tyrant-Manakin, but their ranges are not known to overlap.

Status: The Saffron-crowned Tyrant-Manakin is uncommon but very local, known to occur only in a restricted area in Loreto on the north side of the Amazon River. It also occurs in Co and Br.

Name in Spanish: Saltarín-Tirano de Cresta Azafrán.

Sub-species: Saffron-crested Tyrant-Manakin (Neopelma chrysocephalum), (Pelzeln), 1868.

Meaning of Name: Neopelma: Gr. neos= new, different and pelma, pelmatos= sole of the foot. chrysocephalum: Gr. khrusokephalos, khrusos= golden, gold and kephalos, kephale= headed, head.
