An image from the Baizha Forest Reserve of the funebris subspecies of this interesting woodpecker, a form confined to southwestern China. To find it my wife and I split off from the group for an evening stroll on our own, climbing higher into a fairly intact mature spruce forest as the rest of our travelling companions explored the richer river valley below.
