All packages should be closely examined at time of delivery. If damage is apparent, have
notation “damage in shipment” written on all copies of the freight or express bill before
delivery is accepted or “signed for” by a General Electric representative or a hospital
receiving agent. Whether noted or concealed, damage MUST be reported to the carrier
immediately upon discovery, or in any event, within 14 days after receipt, and the contents
and containers held for inspection by the carrier. A transportation company will not pay a
claim for damage if an inspection is not requested within this 14 day period.

1.1 Product Identification and Shipping List

This is a service manual for the GE 1.5T 16-Channel Cardiac Coil. The 16-channel Cardiac Coil
consists of two 16-element coil halves (anterior & posterior) which are combined into 8-channel
per half in the system connector. Each half is uniquely identified by using the labels below:

Coil installation is not required as all coil files are part of the Signa HDxt HD23 and higher
software.

SECTION 3: 16CH CARDIAC COIL MCQA TEST

Follow this procedure to perform the MCQA test.

3.2 MCQA Setup

The MCQA tool will be run separately for the posterior and the anterior coils. The coil positioning
and the phantom setup for the MCQA is the same for both the coil components.

3.4 Periodic Quality Assurance Check

QA checks should be performed during installation and during planned maintenance. Perform
the quality assurance checks as outlined below to ensure the coil is operating properly.

3.3.1 Check external cable for cracks or cuts.

SECTION 4: TROUBLESHOOTING

Note: The Invivo 16-channel cardiac coil is not to be opened for any reason!

4.1 Mechanical Hardware Check

• Verify that there are no loops in the cables.
• Verify that there are no metal or ferromagnetic objects close to the coil, patient or
magnet (i.e., safety pin, hair pin).
• Verify that the coil is properly positioned.

4.2 Electrical Hardware check

Visually inspect all coaxial connectors and pins on the system plug. If there are any broken,
deformed or recessed pins or coaxial connectors, replace the coil connector block.

4.3 Coil Connector Block Replacement

1. Remove all four fasteners from the bottom system connector housing as
seen in figure 1.

2. Flip the system connector over and remove the top system connector housing to access the
“connector block.” Refer to Figure 2. Caution: Do not contact components beneath the “PCB
protective cover.” Observe all ESD handling practices throughout this procedure.

3. Disconnect all eight RF plugs from the connector PCB assembly RF receptacles starting with RF8,
working left-to-right. Refer to Figure 3.

4. Disconnect the three DC plugs (DC1, DC2, DC3) from receptacles J1, J2 and J3 respectively. Refer
to Figure 3.

5. Remove the connector block from the bottom connector housing. Refer to Figure 4.

6. Place the new connector block into the bottom system connector housing. Make sure that the
connector block is securely place into the bottom connector housing. Refer to Figure 4.

7. Re-connect the eight RF plugs from the new connector block to the RF receptacles on the connector
PCB assembly starting with RF8, working left-to-right. Refer to Figure 3.

8. Re-connect DC plugs DC1, DC2, DC3 to their appropriate receptacles on the connector PCB
assembly. Refer to Figure 3.

9. Dress RF coax and DC lines within the bottom system connector housing’s boundaries to avoid
damaging RF and DC lines upon replacement of the top system connector housing. Refer to Figure 5.

Warning: Failure to properly dress RF and DC line’s within the boundaries of the bottom and top system
connector housings will result in damaging the RF coaxes and DC lines.

10. Ensure that the alignment tabs of the hose are aligned with the edge of the bottom system connector
housing before attaching and fastening the top system connector housing. Refer to Figure 6.

11. Place the top connector housing on the bottom connector housing. Verify that no wiring is pinched in
between the top and bottom connector housings. Refer to Figure 2.

12. Replace all four fasteners into the bottom connector housing. Refer to Figure 1.

Warning: Improper orientation and seating of the system connector block within the system connector’s top
and bottom connector housings will result in damage to the coil’s and the system’s connector.

13. While holding the system connector with the “top” system connector housing (curved half) oriented up,
ensure the RF plugs are on the left side and the DC pins are on the right side of the system connector
block. Refer to Figure 7.

14. While holding the system connector push the two guide pins on the system connector block to ensure
that the connector block is securely positioned between the system connector housings.

4.4 Coil ID Troubleshooting Tips

If the following error is displayed, there may be a problem with the Coil ID coil or system hardware: The
prescribed RF coil and detected RF coil do not match.
Troubleshooting Instructions are available through the service methods by following procedures
1. SRI Coil Id - 16 channel Switch
2. SRI Coil ID Stress Test
The diagnostic will display the contents of the coil ID chip whenever the connector is inserted. Follow the
troubleshooting instructions if the correct ID is not displayed. When the troubleshooting is complete, and if the
correct ID is still not displayed, replace the coil.

SECTION 5: MAINTENANCE

5.1 Coil Care

WARNING!

Detach coil connector from scanner before attempting to clean. Do not reattach after
cleaning until coil has dried completely. Having the coil attached to the system
during cleaning or when it is wet may result in electrical shock.

CAUTION

Do not spray or pour cleaning solution directly on coil. Do not submerge coil in
solution. The coil contains sensitive electronics components that could be damaged
by the solution.
The 1.5T 16-Channel Cardiac Coil, posterior pads must be cleaned and stored using the following procedure:
• Wipe with a cloth that has been dampened in a solution of 10% bleach and 90% tap water, or 30%
isopropyl alcohol and 70% tap water.
• Do not pour any cleaning solution directly on the coil!
• Let the coil housing and pads dry before use.
• Under no circumstances should the coil be placed into any type of sterilizer.
