RM2D6G4AB–An old engraving showing the use of Gatling guns in service in Egypt. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The illustration shows one gun mounted on the back of a camel. The Gatling gun is a rapid-fire weapon invented in 1861 by American Richard Jordan Gatling and a forerunner of the modern machine gun. One of the best-known early rapid-fire firearms, the Gatling gun first saw combat use in the American Civil War. The Gatling gun's operation centred on a hand-cranked, rotating multi-barrel design. It allowed rapid rates of fire without the barrels overheating.

RM2E192B2–An old engraving of Taylor’s machine gun. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. This rapid-firing artillery weapon rotated like a Gatling gun. Cartridges were contained within ‘charging blocks’, one of which is shown on a shelf (centre). Once loaded automatically from a magazine, the block was inserted in the gun. When all cartridge rounds had been fired, the empty shell cases remained in the block could be withdrawn with it. George Taylor owned the Durham Iron Mill and Furnace located in Durham Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA.

RM2B01AGP–China: Cannon and cannonballs at the Nanking Arsenal, built by Li Hongzhang in 1865. Photo by Photo by John Thomson (1837-1921), c. 1871. First used in China during the Song Dynasty (960-1279), cannons were among the earliest forms of gunpowder artillery, and over time replaced siege engines—among other forms of aging weaponry—on the battlefield. The first hand cannon appeared during the 1260 Battle of Ain Jalut between the Mamluks and Mongols in the Middle East. The first cannons in Europe were probably used in Iberia, during the Reconquista, in the 13th century.
