A crested macaque (Macaca nigra) is photographed while having social interaction in Tangkoko forest, North Sulawesi, Indonesia. Climate change and disease are emerging threats to primates. A recent report revealed that the temperature is indeed increasing in Tangkoko forest, and the overall fruit abundance decreased. At the same time, crested macaque belongs to the 10% of primate species that are highly vulnerable to droughts. Their presence is a good indicator of the current health of the ecosystem, according to primate scientists. They depend on large-sized canopy trees for food and sleeping, and prefer old-growth forest.
